Yankees' Chisholm debunks AirPods myth with ear cotton explanation
New York Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. clarified that a white object visible in his ear during a game was cotton to treat an earache, not an AirPod as suggested by viral photos. The 28-year-old sustained the injury when a ground ball kicked off his glove and struck his head in the Yankees' win over the Texas Rangers on Monday. Chisholm addressed the online speculation on Instagram and in comments to The Athletic.
Chisholm said the impact caused an earache that lasted three or four days, with ringing in his right ear for three days. He wore actual AirPods in the clubhouse using noise-cancellation mode to block sounds but insisted no umpire or coach would allow electronics on the field. He posted a photo on his Instagram Story captioned, "All y’all just ain’t the smartest," with a shrug and laughing emoji.
Chisholm has posted a .205 batting average with three home runs, 10 RBI and nine stolen bases this season, a slow start that has improved lately. He has missed no games due to the injury.
Chisholm dismissed the AirPods talk as "not smart," noting AirPods could not reach that far into the ear and that media scrutiny comes with his profile. "If you guys love me that much, s-. I don’t mind it," he said.
