Backlash greets Chainsmokers' first Final Four concert
The Chainsmokers performed between semifinal games at the 2026 NCAA men's basketball Final Four on Saturday night at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. The electronic music duo's set marked the tournament's first halftime concert. The appearance drew criticism from fans and sports media figures over its timing and placement.
UConn defeated Illinois in the first semifinal, after which The Chainsmokers took the stage. Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy, a Michigan supporter, tweeted that the concert "is playing off like somebody lost a bet" and added, "I like the Chainsmokers but nothing has ever made less sense than this." ESPN's Scott Van Pelt questioned the booking with "Who asked for this?" and later clarified, "Not one thing. Just an odd spot."
The performance delayed the Michigan-Arizona tipoff, scheduled for 8:49 p.m. ET but starting around 9:20 p.m. Michigan won 91-73, led by Aday Mara's 26 points, nine rebounds and three assists on 11-of-16 shooting. Trey McKenney added 16 points off the bench, including four three-pointers. Yaxel Lendeborg scored 11 points in 14 minutes despite a sprained MCL and ankle injury; he affirmed he would play in the championship.
Michigan returns to the title game for the first time since a 2018 loss to Villanova. The Wolverines face UConn on Monday night at Lucas Oil Stadium.
